Poodle Army

I don’t know about you, but I’d be a bit intimidated if I walked into a house or bathroom filled with these things.
An army of Poodles
(I wonder if I still have the pink poodle soap and toilet paper holders from my childhood somewhere in storage…)

Cheesy Yarn

I found this advertisement in the back cover of Woman’s Day 101 Sweaters You Can Knit (Number 1, 1963, originally priced 50 cents). How could I resist sharing this cute and kitschy ad? (Click to embiggen.)

What a Match click to embiggen in new window

Rosé is apparently Melrose Yarn Company’s worsted wool (Superba) specifically dyed to match mohair. I think this ad would be cute reproduced on a Valentine card.

Dandruff

I couldn’t resist posting this quote from a 1928 Listerine advertisement.*

Children usually come home from school with a case of dandruff that may lead to baldness.… Examine scalps often, and at the first sign of dandruff, douse on Listerine full strength. Keep it up systematically for several days. To your delight, you will find that dandruff has disappeared and that little scalps are clean, sweet and healthy.…

So, dandruff causes baldness? This is news to me. Is it temporary baldness? Or, are they referring to baldness later in life?

And is this Listerine (”The safe antiseptic”) the same original formula we use as mouthwash nowadays or has the product changed at all? Could we apply a quick rinse in the shower for healthy scalps? (Not that I’m worried about dandruff, but if it makes the hair shiny….)

Another ad from about a year later says:

Full strength Listerine is so safe it can be used in any body cavity, yet so powerful it kills even the stubborn B. Typhosus (typhoid) and M. Aureus (pus) germs in 15 seconds.

Good to know. However, that “body cavity” bit gave me pause.

*I found the ads in the May ‘28 and July ‘29 issues of Needlecraft Magazine.

Vintage Cooties

Last Friday morning, my mom and I noticed an estate sale just a block away from my parents’ house so we walked over to see what it was like. Mom picked up a few sugars and creamers, and I came home with a couple of interesting finds.

Project Spectrum ~ April

I’m so glad the week is over! Next week, I’ll return to my part-time schedule of working on Mon-Tues.

I’m planning to temporarily change the theme for this site to match Project Spectrum. Check back again this weekend! : )

I’ve only been able to knit a little bit in the evenings. I’ve also been ignoring my two larger WIPs and my Continental scarf. Instead, I felt like working on socks.

One of these pairs has orange stripes for Project Spectrum. I think it’s the only orange or yellow yarn I had available! I felt something simple would be ideal for the striping pattern, so I started with the first pattern in Knitting Vintage Socks—Madder Ribbed.

I just had to snap a photo of how the Prisma yarn appeared when wound into a skein. Rather like a Tartan pattern, no?
