Madder Ribbed Socks

Ta da, here are a couple pictures of my most recently completed pair. These will be a gift later this year. So I first tried them on for an “action” shot before washing.

Surprise, Surprise!

The Madder Ribbed socks are finished! Pictures to come on Tuesday once they’re dry.

I didn’t finish them on Friday night as I planned. Instead, I took a break to make a headband based on Knit and Tonic Wendy’s Dream Swatch Head Scarf. I had about half a skein of that yummy Alchemy Bamboo in Rust Red left over from making Mom this basket for her birthday. I thought, “Oooh, perfect for a headband,” since I didn’t have a whole skein to work with. My plan is to find some elastic I’ve put away somewhere and sew the two ends together. I’ll try to do that this coming weekend. But meanwhile, here are a couple pictures. more »

Mishmash

Quick Madder Ribbed socks update… I haven’t been able to work on them very much, but I plan to finish them both by tomorrow evening. Fingers crossed, except when knitting!

I have a BUSY weekend coming up. On Saturday, my parents and I are going to Shepherd’s Harvest. Althought I don’t have my secret pals’ (yes, plural) information yet, I’m hoping to get some fun gifts there. Then on Sunday morning, Mom and I are team-walking at Race for the Cure at MOA. (I’m debating whether I should bring a knitting project; I’m tempted, but I know it will be crowded, and I may not have an appropriate project for walking.)

Oh yeah! I’m hoping for some MDSW weather mojo… the weather prediction: rainy and cool this weekend. : /

Dyann tagged me for a meme. I don’t have a hubby or SO, so I skipped that. more »

Tentative Plans

ATTN Spring Feet Sock Swap Pal: I responded to your comment re: color; you can see it here at the post bottom. : )

I’ve been thinking about my current WIPs and what I want or need to knit this summer.

Back on Track!

I’m so happy! Finally, I frogged what I had knitted on these socks last Thursday.

At first, I frogged only halfway to see if they could be saved this way, but I still wasn’t happy, so RIP, everything went. I was in a positive mood, so I restarted immediately and have been working on them since. more »

Desperately Seeking Two-Point-Five!

A couple weeks ago, I procured a set of Crystal Palace bamboo double-pointed needles, 6-inch length, in US #1.5 (2.5mm). My gauge often is just a bit too tight on US1 and a bit too loose on US2 for most socks. I hoped these US1.5 needles would be the answer. I frogged (sadly) the Madder Ribbed socks and did a quick gauge swatch, perfection! 15 stitches per 2 inches. And the resulting fabric is a skotch looser than what I was getting with US1. I’m a gauge-happy lime!

Not Math Smart

Madder Ribbed Update: I’m experiencing that sneaking feeling that I will be frogging these. I’m keeping them in their travel bag for a couple more days until I take a good look and make my decision.

A few days ago I said I was going to take a break from socks… at the time I typed that, I was thinking it wouldn’t be until early-mid-May before I started a new pair.

A Two-Part WIP

Six Sox KAL update: I finished the Sixth Sense socks this morning! I tried a couple of quick snapshots but they were terrible. I haven’t been having much luck with pictures lately… I’ll try again later today.

I’m not going to start a new pair of socks just yet. I do have the orange Madder Ribbed socks OTN and will continue working on that (or frog and start over, I still haven’t decided). Meanwhile, I want to work on a larger project (both in scale and needle-size). I remembered that I had cast-on and knit two rows of the second cushion cover for my parents. Perfect. Since I haven’t blogged about that yet, here’s the 411.
My parents completed their new basement “rec room” just before Christmas 2005. The walls are Martini Olive, with one accent wall greenish-brown (I’ve forgotten the official name). Their new couch is a dark taupe microsuede. If you’ve seen the HOM Furniture commercials featuring Klik-Klak, that’s exactly what they got. It opens up for two storage areas underneath, or you can take off the arms and “Klik-Klak” the back all the way down for a sleeper/futon that sleeps one comfortably, and two snugly. They also got new shelves and TV stand in brown-black from IKEA. Mom kept her old coffee table (big square, great for jigsaw puzzles) that used to be Grandma’s old farmhouse table.
It was clear they were settled in happily with the new room, but I noticed that there wasn’t much in the way of accessories yet. I had just gotten 25 Cushions to Knit by Debbie Abrahams, so I gave it to Mom, saying, “Take a look at it, let me know if theres’s anything you like.” She picked the Hessian pattern and, not surprisingly, requested cotton.
After some searching around for cotton DK, I found Lana Grossa Lino for sale at Herrschner’s Yarn Sale, but it was 70% cotton, 30% flax. Mom liked it though, and chose tan, olive, and brown. Even though this color combination screamed ’70s to me, it’s a great match for the room.
The Hessian cover is formed first with a center square, and then the back panels are picked up and knit from either the bind-off or cast-on edges. I used single crochet to seam the sides together.

Originally, I thought I would be making only one cover, but it appears that I have enough for another cover if I change the back panels to tan and green. So, one down, one to go. : )

Knitting Spots

kat knits is holding this fun contest/meme: Name 5 places (other than home and LYS) where you’ve knitted.

It’s been fun reading all the various answers. Here’s mine!

  1. At Mall of America, while mall-walking.
  2. Walking around the Highland Park neighborhood.
  3. While traveling (Wellesley in my old dorm!!, Biloxi-Gulfport, and Los Angeles).
  4. At work.
  5. At Mom’s office.

Knitting update:
The Madder Ribbed socks are nearly to the point where I will have to start the heel flap. I’m trying to decide whether they are too tight before continuing (or frogging).

The Sixth Sense socks are coming along well. I’m about halfway through the instep and hope to get to the toe decreases by the end of today.

Orange and Yellow, some of the time

I wanted to post this yesterday, but couldn’t… my wireless connection with Comcast was acting up all weekend. I finally became fed up and watched some TV and knit some more on the Sixth Sense socks.

This ribbed pair is my take along project for mall walking (MOA). The weather is marvelous today and I think I’ll go walking around the neighborhood on Wednesday if the trend continues.

I knit a bit more slowly while walking, but I think I’ve made good progress for about 3-4 hours total. Usually, I only have to fix one or two misplaced purls. On Sunday, however, it was not a good day and I managed to drop a stitch. :/ Fixed it during the car ride home, though, so they’re OK again. : )

MadderSox_GettingThere.jpg

Yesterday at the grocery store, I picked up some Glaceau Vitamin Water on sale, and I realized a few minutes later that the flavors I had picked were April Project Spectrum colors! I swear, I didn’t do that on purpose… I wasn’t in the mood for the red/pink flavors yesterday.

The magazine underneath the bottles is the very last issue ever of Veggie Life. I’ve always liked that magazine for the recipes and was disappointed to find out they’re ending publication. They’re switching to an online recipe club, so my subscription will transfer over. I’ll appreciate being able to browse and print out recipes directly from my computer, but wonder how often they will add new recipes.
