Gansey in Triplicate

So, apparently, Mom and I created a monster when we collaborated on the first Gansey Watch Cap. It led to another, very similar hat, after which Dad asked for of his own (in the same two-color style) in maroon and gold, the U of MN Gopher colors.
What else could I do but make one for him as a Christmas gift? I love how it looks, but the project gave me a couple spots of trouble. I could not get the gauge to work out; I started with the same needle size as I did for the first one, which was made with the same yarn (Wool-Ease), but it was too loose. In the end, I had to go down two needle sizes, and it was still a little bit off.
I originally worked the cuff in the burgundy, after working half the hat body, I realized I wouldn’t have enough to reach the crown decreases which was where I planned to change to gold. Rather, the bottom half of the hat would be maroon, and the top half gold. I could have left it at this, but the effect wasn’t similar enough to the other hats for my liking. I decided to cut off the cuff and then knit it downwards in gold, and finish the body in burgundy. That worked out very well, and I had just enough burgundy left to incorporate into the pompom.
The hat is awfully big, though. I knit the extra-large size, which should’ve been 22" in circumference, but came out closer to 23" due to my wonky gauge. See?

That’s what I was thinking! Does it fit your Dad well? It’s really cute. Now I want one for me. Fear not, I’ll make my own. Unless you’d like to…… ;)

those colors remind me of harry potter for some reason. does that make me crazy?
i’m curious as to whether the hat fits your dad too. i love the texture of the hat.
