Ravelympics 2008: FO #2

I was really suprprised at how quickly I was able to knit these. It took only 6 days (I took one day off to seam and finish the Loon sweater). Considering that these are my first ever pair of stranded colorwork socks, I’m very happy with them.

I continued the leg pattern downwards the instep. The combined symmetry-asymmetry is exactly what I wanted. On a totally random impulse, I started the second sock with a purple band, after having used pink on the other.

(These shoes are Naturalizer ‘Speckle’ and are now discontinued. I found them at Famous Footwear back in June. I love Mary Janes and couldn’t resist adding these quasi-wingtips with teardrop eyelets to my collection.)

My only concern with this pattern was that the gauge is much looser than I prefer for socks (US 4/3.5 mm recommended), especially in the non-colorwork areas. While the kits are convenient, the pattern does list how much of each color is needed in grams and yards, so it would be possible to use sock yarn leftovers (~5-11g each) for the contrast colors. I would recommend using a sturdier fingering weight, perhaps even a light sportweight yarn, or knitting at a tighter gauge and going up one or two sock sizes (the pattern includes 4 sizes).

Even though I finished with days to spare, I do think I chose projects that challenged myself for the Ravelympics. Now, what should I choose for my challenge in 2010? :)
