Goldilocks
When I started putting away the few colors of left over Wool-Ease I had pulled from stash for the Gansey Watch Cap, it occurred to me that I could make my own marled yarn by mixing and holding different color strands together as one yarn.
But what to make? Hats! I needed to add a couple more to my packet for Cornerstone.
While I was pleased by the color combination and striping in my first attempt, the hat itself was… too big.
No problem! I still have lots of yarn left, so I cast on another, with smaller needles. Just a plain hat, no stripes. Not bad, just… too small.
At this point, I had to stop by The Yarnery to pick up my prize from the Socks in the Cities monthly drawing (whee!). I checked the needles in stock, to see if they had some in a size between the two I had already tried. No luck.
Still, I couldn’t shake the hat bug, so I cast on again, and made another one, this time with blue stripes. When I tried it on, it was… just right!
(Oh, how I wanted to keep it!) All these hats pictured here, and a fourth, have been sent off to the project organizer. Because these hats were good stash busters and because I wanted some practice, I’ve written up the pattern and you can find it here. (As soon as my Ravelry profile is enabled for the new PDF pattern store & hosting, I’ll move it there.)

Goldilocks indeed! Hee hee - I do particularly like the too small one.
Good for you!
I have a sweater from the GAP that looks just like your second hat - exact same colour!
I’m impressed. While I’m not buying yarn right now, I’m struggling with a plan, I need some structure or this is going to fall apart soon!
I definitely like that too small one too! Very cool.
The hats turned out very well.
Just in time for the super cold weather we are going to have! I have a lot of Wool Ease in my stash too!
I still haven’t knit myself a hat. I should probably work on that. Thanks for the inspiration.
I love the hats! They all look so warm and cozy. The color combinations sure keep them fun too!
Fun, fun, fun, I will have to whip up one for me and they hubby. Well, actually that would be two wouldn’t it ;)
Nice hats! I like the too small the best but they’re all nice. I keep saying I’m going to knit myself a hat.
Lovely hat :) You are a very talented person!
You must be in hat crave. I can’t seem to like making hats twice in a row eve.
Great hats! Love the colors.
