Goldilocks

16.Jan.08 ~ 7:24 am

When I started putting away the few colors of left over Wool-Ease I had pulled from stash for the Gansey Watch Cap, it occurred to me that I could make my own marled yarn by mixing and holding different color strands together as one yarn.

But what to make? Hats! I needed to add a couple more to my packet for Cornerstone.

While I was pleased by the color combination and striping in my first attempt, the hat itself was… too big.

No problem! I still have lots of yarn left, so I cast on another, with smaller needles. Just a plain hat, no stripes. Not bad, just… too small.

At this point, I had to stop by The Yarnery to pick up my prize from the Socks in the Cities monthly drawing (whee!). I checked the needles in stock, to see if they had some in a size between the two I had already tried. No luck.

Still, I couldn’t shake the hat bug, so I cast on again, and made another one, this time with blue stripes. When I tried it on, it was… just right!

(Oh, how I wanted to keep it!) All these hats pictured here, and a fourth, have been sent off to the project organizer. Because these hats were good stash busters and because I wanted some practice, I’ve written up the pattern and you can find it here. (As soon as my Ravelry profile is enabled for the new PDF pattern store & hosting, I’ll move it there.)

I’m impressed. While I’m not buying yarn right now, I’m struggling with a plan, I need some structure or this is going to fall apart soon!
