Cleanup in the Needle Aisle!

Inspired by Frarochvia’s mad organizational skills, I decided it was past time for me to reorganize some of my knitting accessories.

I started with my circular needles.

I realize it doesn’t look THAT bad in the Before picture above. Because I retained the original packaging to use as a numbering system, it was difficult to know when needles were in storage or currently occupied with projects. Some of the packaging didn’t fit in the top row and had to be folded. It also was a hassle to put away properly. Typically, when finished with a needle, I hung it on my dresser drawer handle. When the needles had accumulated (or when I desperately needed a size I could not find), I would have to sort through them and put them away properly. It was an inefficient system.

So I pulled everything out and packed away the original packaging into a box. I cataloged all the circulars I had, weeded out the excessive duplicates (for some reason I had 6 sets of US 8) and figured out how to distribute the sizes evenly in the holder.

I borrowed Mom’s label machine and made labels for all the pockets, then put the needles away accordingly. Already, the storage is much improved, no longer cluttered.

Folded up, the holder is streamlined and takes up less space than before. (I didn’t think to take a picture to show this, but it was about 3 inches thick folded, and difficult to tie closed.) It’s also much lighter with the bulky packaging removed.

Next month, I hope to get another case for my DPNs. I received two pencil cases last summer during a swap and they work well. However, my DPN collection has pretty much outgrown them.

In case you’re wondering, the holder above is the Circular Needle Stick Sack made by Ashland Sky in Pink (a portion of the profits go to Living Beyond Breast Cancer); I purchased mine at Angelika’s Yarn Store. (Ooh, I see that they have two new hand-dyed trim options available.)

fans self organized goodness! I’m so proud! ;)

I like your pouch idea, and doesn’t labeling make everything better?

Wow! I am very jealous of your organized needles. My dpn’s are all stashed in a glass urn with blue marbles on the bottom, very decorative, but not very organized…..hmmm, I think the organization inspiration is contagious!

What is it with US 8’s? I sorted through my needles nto that long ago, and came up with 12 of the things!

Yikes! So much organization scares me. :-) But I do need to do something with my circs. They’re all over the place. Literally.

I think you are pretty hilarious! Before-organized. After-more organized! (and, it’s the kind of thing I might do too).

That’s very organized! Mine are hanging on a hook on the bookshelves. Hmm. Is it helpful to be able to tell at a glance the size and length? ;)

Hmm, I think my problem is with many 6s – but I knit loosely, so maybe those are actually 8s to the rest of the world!

Cool! I have all my circs in pint sized ziplocs. They’re labeled by size & length and connected by binder rings. So far it’s worked out, but I’m afraid of out growing it:)
