… and all I got was this cute t-shirt

06.Feb.07 ~ 7:46 am

Last week, Mom was invited to a preview of this exhibition at the Weisman Art Museum. She bought me a cool tee as a surprise (Thank you!).

Sockin’ Along

05.Feb.07 ~ 8:37 am

Lily has just announced Sugar ‘n Cream Twists, a marl/ragg version of their cotton. The color selection is small but respectable; I’ll have to keep an eye out for them around here.

I’ve been working on the Fluted Banister socks every time I go mall-walking. I can finish 1-2 inches in a hour, so it takes a while to knit both insteps. As of this weekend, I’ve started the second instep. It’s all stockinette, so I won’t bore you with pictures.

Some of you guessed correctly that my new socks in progress are the Mermaid Socks from Lucy Neatby’s Cool Socks, Warm Feet. The effect the Estonian Fishtail stitch pattern has on the self-striping yarn was a lucky bonus.

More Book Holders

03.Feb.07 ~ 7:13 pm

(Updated October 2007)

I’m glad the book holder reviews have already been helpful to some people. I decided to write up my experiences with the different holders I tried because it isn’t always possible to tell from looking at a picture at a website if something will work the way you want. Book Holders: BookMate I & II

02.Feb.07 ~ 8:53 am

Updated October 2007

The BookMates have been discontinued at the original website. They are now sold at BookmatesPlus. I have updated the below links accordingly.

BookMate offers an eponymous book holder in several versions. Each is designed for a certain book size: BookMate I for mass paperbacks, BookMate II for trade paperbacks and small hardcovers, and BookMate III1 for hardcovers. BookMate I & II are book covers, but they also keep the book open when desired. The prices range from $11.50 to $22.49. A Mini-Rest stand is available separately ($7.75), or you can use your own stand, flat surface, or pillow, for hands-free reading.

Book Holders: The BookGem

01.Feb.07 ~ 9:44 am

(Bibliophiles may want to check out Kimbooktu, a blog about book gadgets and news; thanks Amy for sharing the link in yesterday’s post! Also in related news, Chris just posted a free felted bookweight pattern. Neat!)

Everything about the BookGem seemed to be what I was looking for in a hands-free book holder: it was small (5.5″ x 2.5″) and reasonably priced ($14.95). This stand was supposed to hold fat paperbacks and hardcovers and also provide the reader with two different angles for reading.
