10 Knitterly Things You Didn’t Know About Me

It took me a few days, but I’ve fnally been able to list 10 things. Original meme introduced by Grumperina.

  1. Sometime during 1st or 2nd grade, I learned to knit from a daycare giver who watched me in the mornings until my school bus arrived. I made only one thing: garter stitch slippers for my mom. At that time, I hated the look of garter stitch (and still did for a long time). I gave the slippers to Mom that Christmas, and she wore them.
  2. My first project for re-teaching myself to knit in 2003 was a 8-inch wide and goodness-knows-how-long scarf in Lion Brand Homespun Baroque (purple heather). I knit it in plain stockinette, and then wore it all winter long.
  3. While working on the above scarf, I kept the TV on. As the week progressed, I awas able to learn how to knit by touch, watch TV, and read captioning simulatenously.
  4. I’m a English-style knitter most of the time. My hand movements are minimal and efficient. I let go of the needle in my right hand, move my hand upwards while at the same time bending my index finger to loop the yarn around the needle, and then move my hand down to take up the right needle and move the stitch off the left needle.
  5. I have knit socks using Sugar ‘n Cream. In fact, I made four pairs! Enough said.
  6. I usually swatch before starting a new project. However, to date, I have not washed/blocked any of the swatches to determine the final result. I haven’t kept most of my swatches either. I usually frog them and use the yarn to start the project.
  7. I am a pattern junkie. I love finding new and different patterns. I used to feel guilty about this because 1) the item isn’t always to my taste, and 2) I won’t have time to knit everything. Now, I realize having lots of patterns can be a good thing. Inspiration can come from patterns, either as a means to use stash yarn or by giving birth to/introducing a new idea/techinque, etc. The right person or opportunity for a pattern could also come along someday and I would be ready with pattern in hand. Lastly, patterns are a great way for me to shop at a yarn store without actually buying yarn.
  8. Whenever possible, I love to get up early (~4-5 AM) and knit while watching a movie before facing the day.
  9. As a still-novice knitter sometime in Winter 2003-2004, I attempted to knit the Chinese Waves dishcloth. In the process, I destroyed the tip on one of my US 7, 10-inch Brittany straight needles. I never finished this dishcloth.
  10. I keep most of my knitting notions in a vintage green plastic jewelry/sewing box under my bed. I found the box on eBay for a steal. The lid shows in relief two kittens playing with a yarn ball. (You can find these boxes every now and then on eBay, often labeled as Bakelite, which they aren’t.)

Wow, a needle destroyed knitting a dishcloth? That’s one tough dishcloth! My wrists and feet ache just thinking about SnC socks…

I do the the same thing with swatches, too, I never wash them, and I usually frog them. I love collecting patterns, but in Norway, where I grew up, you couldn’t buy the pattern without buying the yarn… Tough! So I have a bunch torn from magazines. I was sorry I missed your fun contest, I have been off line for a while.

Intrigued by the dishcloth, I checked out the pattern. Since I’m not really a fan of garter stitch, this might be something I could substite next time. Thanks! (Hopefully it won’t break my needles) :)

huh,1 i am such a pattern geek too! i am mostly after online free ones though. the turkish ones comes with the magazines and they are not written well and you have to be the master of the black arts to understand… i checked out the washcloth pattern and noticed that it is the same stitch with the heel part of my socktoberfest socks which is pure acrylic, muwahahaa :)

oh by the way i am the only one to feel disgust to touch such wash/dish cloths when they are wet? oh well… but i do want to knit back to school ones from the knitty’s last issue..

In progress…
