Now that my deadline knitting has completed, I should’ve returned to my other WIPs, like the Color Blox Sox, Rock and Weave socks, or the Cropped Cardi. But I didn’t.

Faced with a sort-of deadline for August, I dug out the Lion Brand Wool I bought earlier this year and started a stranded two-color swatch. I’ve done Intarsia before, but not Stranded or Fair-Isle, because I hadn’t been very interested in most of the projects I’ve seen. Saturday night, I went at it to see how I would do. Here’s my first swatch:

I’m very pleased with my results. There were only a few spots where I had a problem with tension or puckering. It’s hard to see in this scanned (and thus slightly smooshed) picture, but during the first pattern repeat, I did get a slight ridge at each column between DPNs, so I was careful not to tug during the second pattern. Success; the second was much smoother.
Unfortunately the gauge is a bit too tight for the hat pattern I’m going to knit, so I need to go up a needle size. But based on this experience, I went ahead and started a cuff with my US 6 DPNs instead of the US 5 listed in the pattern. I’m making striped mittens with the Dover yarn I received for my birthday. I don’t have any pictures yet, but the blues sure are pretty.
You may remember me mentioning my oldest UFO in this post. I happened to take a picture of it when I was moving it to my new storage box. I present to you further proof of my fickleness! Only one strip (out of 4 total) has been finished.

You can see the wrong side in the upper right, and the subtle difference between the beige (left bottom) and the gold (right bottom). I’m using Reynolds Saucy (mercerized cotton) for this afghan. I hope to return to this project before 2006 ends. : )

Your swatch looks good! Are you one or two-handing your Fair Isle? And is the oldest UFO for you or your folks?

I’m two-handing, mainly because I want to use my left hand more. And yup, that oldest UFO is the afghan for my parents. Yikes!
