Secret Pal 8 Questionnaire

*wave* Hello Secret Pal! If anything is confusing, or you have questions anytime, please feel free to ask. : )

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like? The last two yarns I remember *really* enjoying working with were KnitPicks Decadence (100% alpaca) and Socks That Rock. I don’t like working with railroad/ladder yarn very much. Lion Brand Microspun is another one I didn’t like, because the splitting drove me crazy. Otherwise, I’m pretty comfortable using different fiber types.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in? All my circulars are crammed into a pink Ashland Sky Knit Stick Sack; I love this organizer! It’s full, and I should probably use another one, but I never got around to it. I have very few single-points and keep these in two small black tapestry holders. My double-points currently reside in front of my TV. : )

3. How long have you been knitting? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced? I learned how to knit and crochet as a child, but my preferred craft at that time was Cross-Stitch. I stopped X-Stitch in my mid 20s when my eyesight became much too bad. I tried knitting in July 2003 and fell in love it, I haven’t looked back since. I would consider myself an Advanced Intermediate. I’m comfortable with entrelac, lace, short rows, and socks. I haven’t done real Fair Isle yet, because I haven’t really found any projects I want to do. (Correction: I would love to try the KnitPicks sock patterns (or similar), but haven’t ordered them yet.)

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list? Yup! I have a page setup that includes links to my general (books, movies, games) wishlist and Knitting wishlist at Amazon. I also have a KnitPicks wishlist, but that can only be emailed, so let me know if you would like a copy. : ) (Tip… if you check out my Amazon wishlists… try sorting the lists by Priority, since the default is to sort by Add Date.)

5. What’s your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products etc.) I like citrus, or other natural scents. But I also prefer that they be mild. I have a very sensitive nose. I don’t do candles very much right now because I have NO room. Shower gels etc are great, though!

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy? I like chocolate. : ) I’ve developed an allergy to peanuts since February 2005, though, so that’s a No-No. I love chocolate with mint, caramel, or toffee. Chocolate and fruit, not so much.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin? I would say knitting is pretty much it. I don’t have time for anything, not even designing, which I’d like to try.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD) I don’t do music. Or podcasts.

9. What’s your favorite color? Or–do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can’t stand? Oooh, I love color. I’m not afraid of color, but I tend to go through phases. Yellow is my least favorite with orange a close second (but I like orange and blue together, or orange and hot pink). I prefer deep jewel-like or muted colors over pastel or basic primary colors. My favorite color combination of all time is green and purple. I’ve bookmarked some colors I find interesting in my wishlist; that may help you.

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets? I’m single, with two cats (Jester and Munchkin, sisters).

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos? I haven’t ever worn a poncho (I have doubts they would even look good on me). Hats, scarves, and mittens, yep. I need them during the coooold winter months here in MN.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit? This is definitely a sock year for me. Beyond socks, I don’t think I have any real favorites; I like to work on different things.

13. What are you knitting right now? Two pairs of socks, a cushion cover for Mom, and a cabled cardi for myself.

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts? Surely! I love little crafty things, like cards, etc, because they’re pretty and I never have time to make them myself. : )

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic? I’m pretty flexible with needle material types. I really like bamboo, but I also like the teflon-coated aluminum. For me, it depends on the yarn. I used to be a two-circs gal when it came to socks, but I’m on a DPN phase right now. For non-sock knitting, I generally use circulars.

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift? I have a yarn winder, but not a swift.

17. How did you learn to knit? A lady who watched me before/after school taught me the knit stitch to make slippers for Mom. I think I was about 9 or so. The second time around, I was inspired by an article in Martha Stewart Living. The purl stitch give me a little bit of trouble at first, but once I figure it out, I just kept going. : )

18. How old is your oldest UFO? Umm, oh dear, about 2 years now. I have one and 1/4 strips of an afghan for my parents. I promised myself I would get back to it this year!!

19. What is your favorite holiday? I like them all the same. I guess my birthday counts as just a personal holiday, heheh.

  1. Is there anything that you collect? I’m a packrat collector. Does yarn count? : ) What about needles? Oh well! I do like little vintage crafty tools like needle holders, gauges, or yarn/wool holders, and old pattern booklets. I also like Boyd’s Glass Bunny on Nest. I also love old kitchen glassware, especially refrigerator dishes. I have a pretty good collection from my pre-knitting days.

21. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have? For books, I have some listed in my Amazon wishlist; for the link, see this page. I’ve tried not to be a greedy pig—there are more books I’d like than what is listed. For example, I’ve yet to read any of The Yarn Harlot’s books. : ) As for magazines, I am supposed to start getting Cast-On this month. I used to subscribe to Family Circle Easy Knitting, but that got transferred over to Vogue’s Knit Simple. I have a Vogue Knitting subscription that ends this winter, I believe. And I do get Interweave Knits, often my favorite.

22. Are there any new techniques you’d like to learn? I would like (and am trying) to improve my Continental knitting tension, so I can use two hands to work Fair Isle. And, I would love to be able to knit two socks (one inside the other) at the same time on DPNs. That’s my big goal for this year!

23. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements? Yep, yep, I make socks (they’re great for knitting while walking and getting exercise). My foot measurements are: Width ~ 3.5″ (circumference is 8.5″), length ~ 9.75″ (I wear a US Women’s 9-9.5).

24. When is your birthday? (mm/dd) June 22 (soon!!)
