Sixth Sense Socks

22.Apr.06 ~ 8:43 pm

As I posted earlier, I finished this pair early yesterday morning. I’m wearing them now as I type!

I had a lot of “firsts” while working on these socks:

  • My first experience with Socks that Rock yarn. I’m so very pleased with this yarn. It feels so soft while wearing and there’s no itchiness at all. I also love how plain stockinette feels and looks; I’ll have to remember this yarn for when I’m in the mood for plain/basic socks.
  • My first hem. I knew how they worked in theory, from patterns and magazine articles. I just didn’t have the opportunity to do one until now. Lesson also learned: be sure there is a strong contrast between the working and spare yarns! If I knit this pattern again, I’ll go with the ribbed cuff, so I can have a longer leg/cuff.
  • My first garter short-row heel. It was nice and easy to do. Mine is a bit smaller than I would prefer. I think next time I might try a few garter rows on the underside of the instep to create the illusion of a larger heel, maybe.
The heel “seam” seems reversible… one side on the outside looks exactly like the inside on the other side, and vice-versa. Next time, I’ll see if I can get both outside seams to match.
  • My first garter star toe. (I think that’s the type of decreases used, I could be wrong, though). The toe is very rounded, which I like. I should have started earlier, to compensate for the puffy garter-stitch and the blooming that occurs with washing.
  • My first gathered closing on socks. I’m not crazy about how this looks. I’m getting used to it, though! I’d like to try grafting garter-stitch, or even maybe doing one purl row before closing up.
  • My first time participating in the Six Sox KAL! I’m so glad I finally got the chance with an interesting pattern.

Wow,they look great! I really like how the garter heel and toe mix up the colors and don’t interfere with the wonderful striping. I’ll have to keep that technique in mind :-)

You did a wonderful job with these socks! The pattern shows off the yarn as well as the Cedar Creek ones would have. Question, are the sock blockers worth the money? I really like how they look in your first photo.

Your socks turned out great! I haven’t started knitting mine yet, but seeing these makes me want to go home and cast on!

No yarn left for stitches.
